CHAPTER 28

GERALD

Three days earlier

Groaning, Gerald shifted. A deep ache pulsed through his body, and he couldn’t figure out what the high-pitched noise in his ears was. Had he been listening to his music loud enough to make his ears ring again? He didn’t think so…

Mouth dry and nose getting tickled by dust, he coughed, then groaned again at the ache in his body growing to a legitimate pain. Settling himself, he tried to remember what had just happened.

He’d been… in the evac center. Right. Not his apartment. And he’d been about to meet Herman but something told him that never happened.

Because… because…

Oh, right. There’d been an attack, and some other consciousness had slammed into him.

Eyes shooting open, Gerald gasped as he recalled it all.

Another consciousness. Years’ worth of memories and information about some other planet called Tragelon. More importantly, the consciousness had information about the aliens that had attacked Fort Collins.

“Fuck,” Gerald whispered. He looked around himself, heart dropping as he did.

He was under rubble.

“Double fuck,” he whispered. He dropped his head, trying to calm his heart.

All he succeeded in doing was breathing in a lungful of dust and coughing.

“I would suggest being quiet,” a masculine voice in his head said. “Unless you want to attract more Phenomenon to finish the job they started.”

Startled, he was about to ask who in the world was speaking when realization dawned.

He knew the voice. It was the consciousness that he’d felt just before the shelter collapsed. The one who he’d practically gotten a whole lifetime of memories downloaded from.

The alien’s name, he knew it…

“Nyco?” he said, coughing again.

“Correct. Now be quiet while I try to get us out of this mess in one piece.”

Gerald didn’t need to be told twice. He didn’t think he would be the one getting them out of this. And if there were more Phenomenon around?

His heart picked up its pace again at the thought.

He didn’t know what Nyco was doing, but after several seconds of silence, the man—alien—person—spoke.

“Alright. When I say, I’m going to activate my shields again. It should push the rubble off your body, and then you’re going to have to do exactly as I say so we escape any Phenomenon still in the area. Got it?”

Gerald nodded, unwilling to make excess noise now that he understood a little more about their predicament. He tried to think of what shields Nyco was talking about, and hazily recalled an off-white energy barrier flaring around him just before the shelter had collapsed.

Apparently that was what had saved him from the falling rubble and a lot of broken bones, possibly even death. The thought of lying in the rubble with dead people made his stomach churn.

“Focus!” Nyco snapped. “You will have time to ‘freak out’ later. Prepare yourself to move.”

A strange sense of power ran through Gerald’s body, and the wreckage shifted. Groaning and whining, the debris slowly cleared, and large chunks of concrete and twisted metal were heaved up into the air and pushed aside, revealing a slight opening ahead of Gerald.
